We are pleased to award the fourth Gordon L. Beil Memorial STEM Scholarship to Ms. Michaela Ford!
This award recognizes Michaela's passion for STEM, her academic achievements, advanced studies, educational mentorship at all grade levels, and her career choice of Biomedical Engineering at University of Kentucky, with a goal of changing lives through science. To quote Michaela: "I can help people gain the ability to pursue the things they love."
2024 note: we heard through her dad that she has developed a keen interest in genetics and exploring that avenue.
Michaela has excellent overall academic achievements, with many Honors and Advanced Placement classes. She was ranked #3 of 339 Seniors for 6 semesters.
Michaela's Biomedical STEM interests were spurred by several personal events: her paternal grandmother's battle with Stage 4 multifocal glioblastoma (a highly aggressive brain cancer). Finding herself unable to help in this situation, it promoted her desire to find hope in the future for issues like this.
Michaela's personal experiences in how medicine and technology enhanced her life also incited a passion for biomedical technology. She was born with a hearing issue, missing an eardrum and canal. She learned adaptive behaviors to compensate, had surgical repair, wore a hearing aid, and had years of speech therapy. Experiencing how quickly surgery and a hearing device accelerated her learning and development sparked the desire to contribute in biomedical engineering to improve others' lives.
Her mother is a biomedical engineer and grandfather was a mechanical engineer, feeding her love of science through their own work-related stories and continual exposure to their fields.
Michaela received awards and honors for Character Counts, multiple Archery awards/achievements, Conner Academic Excellence in Chemistry, National Honor Society, Educators Rising, Leadership League, Conner Sources of Strength peer mentoring program, Character Counts, Life Skills co-founder, Future Problem Solving Governor's Cup, and Men and Women of Conner. She is also a Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) Senator Jeff Green Scholar, an honor earned by achieving a 4.0 GPA each year of high school and a minumum 28 ACT composite score.
She has volunteered with the Boone County Public Library, St. Elizabeth Hospital Edgewood, and Conner's Paws for a Cause.
