We were pleased to award the second Gordon L. Beil Memorial STEM Scholarship to Mr. Quentin Roa.

This award recognizes Quentin's passion for STEM
, his academic excellence, advanced studies, and career choice of Computer Sciences and Media Informatics.

Quentin searched for a passion and academic fit before finding a home in STEM. “It was STEM areas where I finally found that I really belonged.  I have tried many extracurricular activities, but none suited me or excited me as much as robotic teams, gaming teams (E-Sports), Toyota Makerspace and Duke Line/CAD/Engineering groups. Having a passion for STEM and computer science has led to many positive experiences and I look forward to continuing that in college and my future career.”

“I am inspired by the constantly evolving world of technology, and how technology can be used to have a positive impact in our lives.”

Seeing first-hand how programming and robotics can improving human safety and working conditions has been motivating.  A Duke Energy employee working with Quentin’s NaviGo group shared examples of these such as robots on job sites which can warn workers, and SWAT Bots for police which can remotely communicate with criminals or evaluate scenes without putting humans at risk.

Quentin demonstrated high achievements in overall academics, sports, school-related STEM programs, and community volunteer involvement.  These achievements included high school honors programs, college-level courses and early acceptance into college level STEM programs for high-achieving majors.

Some of his STEM areas of achievement include Computer Sciences, Robotics, 3D printing, CAD design and Media Informatics.  He has excelled in the NaviGo Scholars program and been accepted to NKU’s SOAR Scholars program for high-achieving STEM career students.  SOAR Scholars are STEM undergraduate students that participate in academic and extracurricular activities designed to promote individual growth as a STEM major.

Quentin attends Northern Kentucky University. His goal is to earn a Bachelor’s in Computer Science, then begin a career in software or robotics development. We wish him the best and we know he will be successful in his endeavors.
