We are pleased to award the third Gordon L. Beil Memorial STEM Scholarship to Ms. Avonia Utz!
This award recognizes Avonia's passion for STEM, her academic achievements, advanced studies, educational mentorship at all grade levels, and her career choice of Chemistry/Biology and Secondary Education.
Avonia has admirable achievements in overall academics, sports, school-related STEM & extra-curricular programs, and community volunteer involvement, as well as Leadership in Education, science, sports, and performance arts. Her achievements also included honors classes, STEM mentoring in math, chemistry & biology at all grade levels, and experience as a classroom laboratory technician and STEM classroom intern for previous teachers.
Her STEM passion began with an influential junior high teacher making her 7th grade science class "so fun!". A high school science teacher in her Junior year “opened doors for me I didn’t know were possible” by being an in-classroom lab tech to experience science's research side. Avonia performed labwork and research not typical for most students. She partnered with the biology department in bacterial research and a display presented to the student body to promote better health habits.
Avonia also had an "amazing opportunity to be an intern for my previous teachers. This opportunity has taught me how to be an effective leader and taught critical thinking skills which will help me with becoming a teacher." Taking education career classes helped with her role as a summer camp counselor, and see the impact a child's environment could have on them, such as hunger or poverty.
Avonia received awards for best school spirit, representing at sporting events as Conner's Cougar mascot during her high school years. What a fun role!
She is a respectful, focused and determined young woman, and showed these characteristics from a very young age. She described herself with one phrase we know is true: “I believe I have the moxie … to achieve my goals.”
Before starting her Senior year, Avonia was accepted into Murray State University, her college of choice. She seeks to focus on Biology/Chemistry teaching at secondary education level as well as being open to career possibilities in biomedical or medical areas. We wish her the best and we know she does have the moxie to succeed!
